Visceral has hidden helpful goodies (ammo, materials to craft weapons and the mysterious Peng Treasure) throughout the game. They hit a great mid-point between damage, effect and ammo availability. But I suggest you go the exact opposite direction as often as you can. Dead Space weapons number seven in total, found around the Ishimura and the best of them are the Ripper and Contact Beam. If you consult Isaac's hand-dandy Locator gadget, it will tell you exactly where you need to go next in the game.
